Subject: Difficulty Transferring UVs Between Model and Hair Files

    Dear Jerry,

Thank you again for your detailed and kind explanation regarding the Model and Hair files. It really helped clarify a lot for me.

I’ve been trying to follow your suggested method to transfer the UV maps from the Model file to the Hair file. I opened the Hair file, appended the UV-unwrapped model from the Model file, and followed the steps with Ctrl + L → “Copy UV Maps”.

However, I wasn’t able to successfully copy the UVs, even after several attempts.

After some careful inspection, I realized that the models may have slight differences in structure—perhaps the vertex count, topology, or modifiers. I checked the vertex numbers and tried removing modifiers, but the UV transfer still didn’t work. Could this be the reason?

In the meantime, I attempted to resolve the issue manually by duplicating the UDIM textures from the Model file and reapplying them to the Hair model. While this partially worked, I noticed that the textures are slightly misaligned—probably due to subtle differences in the UVs or geometry.

Also, as part of my learning process, I’ve been practicing manually marking seams when painting textures, to better understand UV workflows.

If possible, I’d like to ask for your advice:
Would you recommend replacing the Hair model with the one from the Model file (which already has UVs), and then transferring the fur/hair system instead? Or is there a better workflow you could suggest?

I would greatly appreciate any further advice or a more detailed step-by-step if available. I’m still learning and trying my best to follow along correctly, and I truly appreciate all the guidance and support you provide.

Thank you again for your time.

    Best regards,
    Kazumi Uchida

Thank you again for your detailed message and for taking the time to carefully explore the workflow—I can truly see how dedicated you are to learning and problem-solving!

After reading through your description, you’re absolutely right: if the two models have even slight differences in topology or vertex count, then unfortunately UVs cannot be directly transferred between them. That seems to be the case here, and it explains why the Copy UV Maps operation didn’t succeed.

In this situation, I would recommend going with Plan B:
Transferring the fur system onto the UV-unwrapped model from the Model file, instead of trying to copy UVs to the Hair file.

This workflow is a bit different and may involve several steps to properly transfer the fur. I’d be more than happy to help walk you through it directly and make sure it works perfectly.

If you’re comfortable with it, please feel free to send me your .blend file so I can take a closer look and demonstrate the exact process within your project. You can send it to:

      vfxgrace@gmail.com

Once I receive the file, I’ll provide a clear and thorough step-by-step solution tailored to your case, so we can resolve everything in one go.

Thanks again for your patience and for putting so much care into your learning process. I really appreciate your enthusiasm—keep it up!

Subject: Confusion About Which File to Use in the Tutorial

    Dear [Instructor/Team at VFX Grace],

    Hello, this is Kazumi Uchida.

I’ve been following the wolf tutorial and downloaded the two provided files:
    JF0O0P00_Wolf_Model_3.6.9.blend and JF0O0P00_Wolf_Hair_3.6.9.blend.

Since there was no explanation at the beginning regarding which file to use, I started working with the “Model” file. However, later in the tutorial, the explanation suddenly continues using the “Hair” file, which caused some confusion for me.

I’m now unsure at what point I should have switched files, or whether I misunderstood the intended workflow.
Could you please advise me on:

From which point in the tutorial the “Hair” file should be used?

Whether it’s possible (or recommended) to continue from the “Hair” file from that point onward?

I really want to follow the tutorial correctly, and I appreciate your guidance.

Thank you so much for your time and support.

    Best regards,
    Kazumi Uchida

Thank you so much for your message, and I’m really glad to hear you’ve been following the wolf tutorial!

Your question is totally understandable—and you’re absolutely right to seek clarity.

Since the main focus of the tutorial is on the texture creation workflow, it’s completely fine to work with the Model file. That file contains everything you need for the core parts of the tutorial.

The reason the Hair file is later used is simply because fur color maps are not very intuitive to preview directly on the base model—they’re primarily designed to be seen on the fur. So in some later chapters where we check or demonstrate fur colors, the tutorial switches over to the Hair file for better visual feedback. But both files use exactly the same model, so you don’t need to worry—either one works depending on your needs.

If you’d like to switch over to the Hair file midway, you can do that at any time. And if you’ve re-unwrapped or customized the UVs in the Model file, you can easily transfer your UVs to the model in the Hair file like this:

      1. Select the model without UVs in the Hair file;

      2. Then Shift+select the model with UVs from the Model file;

      3. Press Ctrl + L, and choose “Copy UV Maps”.

      That’s it!

I hope this clears things up. Please feel free to reach out anytime if you have more questions. I really appreciate your careful work and attention to detail—keep going, you’re doing great!
